Biography

Malcolm Oakes SC was a founding committee member (2020-2023) and Secretary of Our Chinese Past. He passed away in November 2023. Malcolm was a senior counsel practising at the New South Wales Bar who has a lay interest in Chinese-Australian history. His wife, Beverley Choy, is Chinese Australian whose various forebears had 19th and early 20th century businesses at Rocky River and Tingha in New South Wales and Cooktown in Queensland. Malcolm delivered presentations to Dragontails, CHINA Inc, New South Wales Bar Association, Asian Australian Lawyers Association and Australia-China Friendship Society (NSW).  Malcolm is a member of the Chinese Australian Historical Society Inc, Chinese Heritage Association of Australia Inc, and Chinese Heritage in Northern Australia Inc (CHINA Inc). For a tribute to Malcolm, see Vale Malcolm Oakes.
